Oncidium (Psychopsis) Mendenhall 'Hildos'Orchidaceae ~ Orchid Family
Many know that the Orchid Family is very diverse, but few know that there are likely over 20,000 species in the world, and more than 300,000 cultivars. While the number of native species is being reduced due to loss of habitat and extinction, the number of forms of cultivated plants is increasing daily. This cultivar is close to the Butterfly Orchid, Oncidium papilio (now Psychopsis krameriana), which is native to northern South America to Panama. The few members of the genus Psychopsis (created from species which had previously been considered part of the large genus Oncidium) have long antenna-like upper petals and upper sepal, in contrast to its large and strikingly colored lower sepals and lower lip, giving the flowers the look of butterflies.
